Churches and monasteries

Many churches in the Middle Weser region are open and accessible to visitors. Notices give details of the opening times for the most frequently open churches and parishes. Here guests are welcome! They are a place of reflection and encounter. Interesting Romanesque churches can be found in Achim, Balge, Binnen, Barrien, Daverden, Drakenburg, Hassel, Kirchweyhe, Marklohe, Peter Hagen, Riede, Riessen, Steimbke and Vilsen.

The Cistercian prayer house is one of the most imposing monasteries in Germany. The cloister, the impressive Late Romanesque collegiate church, the numerous gardens and ponds and the precious library with its valuable manuscripts and ornate bibles are impressive testimonials to Christian activity. The monastery, founded in 1163, is still very active today in many respects: on the one hand, symposia are held here; on the other hand, prospective pastors are trained here, who also live there.

Legend has it that the collegiate church was built on the spot where a donkey took residence - the monks considered it a sign of God. The ‘Cathedral of Hoya Land’, with its impressive double-tower facade, which can be seen from far away, is furnished with magnificent art treasures from the 13th century. The stone building from the year 1050 replaced an old wooden church of 882.

With its 72 meter high neo-Gothic tower, the church is a landmark on the cityscape of Nienburg. Remains of the original Romanesque church from the late 12th century can still be seen today. The first tower was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War and replaced by the neo-Gothic tower that we see today. In the vault are the sarcophagi of Count Jobst II and Otto VII and their wives.

This gem was donated in 1148 by Count von Hallermund as a Benedectine monastery. In 1560 Count Erich von Hoya had the monastery church demolished in order to use the stones to enlarge his castle at Stolzenau. He then had a half-timbered church built as atonement, which still stands today and has celebrated its 300th anniversary.
